Let's Talk About Growth

Made by Malyia

Color MBM headshot.JPG

When I started Made by Malyia, I had no idea I was creating a jewelry company or brand. Sometimes growth doesn’t feel like you're growing initially. I think that’s why many people quit or stop working towards their dreams. Time will go by and one day you will look up and years of work will finally start to pay off. They say it takes 10 years to be an overnight success. After 6 years of growing Made by Malyia into a lifestyle and jewelry brand, I fully understand what that means. I always knew I wanted to take the brand to the highest limits, but I would be lying if I didn’t say it wasn’t the biggest test of self-belief and faith. I had to work jobs I hated to pour into a brand I believed in. Constantly feeling like I was falling apart only to rebuild again. Growth is a sacrifice.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frighten us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?" -Marianne Williamson

This quote embodies the struggles I faced to break through the fear to arrive at a place of self-love and power. As the only black woman in the room at the fashion companies, I spent years overlooked, undervalued, and my light dimmed. This caused me to question my talent, this is one of the reasons it is important for me to design jewelry that makes people feel empowered. If you ever question your power, I want you to put on a piece of Made by Malyia jewelry and remember how powerful you truly are. Growth is an act of self-love.

It doesn’t matter how long it feels like it is taking, keep going. Real success isn’t instant. Growth is a gradual and slow process, one step at a time.

My journey as an entrepreneur has been challenging. I continue to prove to myself that I deserve to be powerful beyond measure and so do you.

With love always,
Malyia McNaughton

2017 Forward Conference-Keynote Speaker

Made by Malyia

I was a keynote speaker for the Forward Conference in Washington, DC January 6-8. A 3 day interactive experience featuring 4 keynote speakers and 30 guest speakers provide inspiration and insight on how to move ideas forward, successfully. NBTM the company behind the conference connects individuals of varying ethnicities, socioeconomic levels, life aspirations, and career achievements helping them to hone their ideas and creative abilities, through a supportive, global network.

I had the opportunity to connect and share my journey with young professionals. It was an honor to share the stage as a panelist with Miss Jessie's Founder Miko Branch. As a young entrepreneur it was inspiring to sit next to a pioneer.  The weekend was inspiring and I left feeling re-energized. The next Forward Conference is March 2018 in NYC, mark your calendars it will be one you don't want to miss. Visit the Forward Conference website HERE for more info.

Year Review: Jewels Thank you for ROCKING with us in 2016!

Made by Malyia

Jewels I can't thank you enough for making 2016 the best one yet. This year was truly a journey and marked my year anniversary as an entrepreneur. One of my goals when I started Made by Malyia was to be able to bring everyone along on this journey as I grew the brand. None of this would be possible without your consistent support so I wanted to review the year and let you know what's next for the brand.

I started off the year with a modeling contract that was made possible because of my appearance at Afropunk a few months earlier. I released a new collection and was featured by several blogs.

In June my jewelry as well as myself was featured in the Colored Girl Campaign. The campaign was featured by Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Instyle, EssenceYahoo Beauty and many more

I was the natural hair model on the Today Show Summer Hair styles segment in August that went viral, the segment didn't go as planned, receiving over 10 million views. At first I didn't want the segment to overshadow the progress I made with the brand. When people started to leave comments asking where they could purchase the jewelry I had on the show, which of course was the full Made by Malyia collection, I knew my hard work wouldn't go unrecognized.

I returned to Afropunk in Brooklyn for the second consecutive year as vendor. I received more overwhelming love and support.

What's Next for the brand?

I kick of the year as Keynote speaker in Washington DC. at the Forward Conference January 6-8 2017, where I will be sharing my journey and how to live your best life. I will be hosting the Curls on the Block Launch party in Denver, Colorado January 28, 2017.

I will be releasing a new campaign and much more.

Jewels, Thank you for rocking with us. Here's to making 2017 even better.

AFROPUNK 2016 x MADE BY MALYIA JEWELRY- POWER TO THE PARTY-RECAP

Made by Malyia

We returned for Afropunk Brooklyn 2016 and this year was better than ever! I loved connecting with all the people who discovered our brand for the first time and the jewels who returned and remember us from last year. Leading up to Afropunk I was super nervous, even more than the first time I was selected from hundreds of applicants to be a vendor. This year my expectations were much higher because I wanted to improve from my freshman year and perfect my festival pop-up.

The love and energy was overwhelming and my main focus was engaging with everyone that stopped by the booth. I enlisted my best friend and girlboss wedding and event planner Michelle to keep me as sane and organized like she does her brides on their big day. The most popular pieces were our "Commitment Issues" nose cuff, "Boundless" Choker, "Perpetual" wrap necklace and "Venus" Body chain. By the end of day 1 most of the top sellers were sold out.

Afropunk is more than a festival it is a collective of individuals overflowing with creativity and self-love. The #BlackGirlMagic, #MelaninMagic, #CareFreeBlackGirl, #_____ add any collective self-love hashtag and chances are it's on full display and I'm here for all of it.  One of my favorite things to do is venturing away from the booth to check out all the dope looks. This year everyone came with their fashion A game. In my opinion the fashion at Afropunk rivals that of fashion week and lets be honest the majority of designers draw inspirations from street style and events like Afropunk. This year their was no shortage of inspiration.

I missed most of the performers but had the chance to watch Ceelo and Ice Cube. They were amazing! Next year I'm posting "I'll be back in 20 minutes" sign so I can catch so more performances lol.

Thank you to everyone that stopped by to say hi and shop with us! Welcome to the Made by Malyia Jewelry tribe! See you next year!
