Reflecting On 2020
Made by Malyia
2020 has been a year filled with loss and a year some of us want to forget. The pandemic combined with the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the social awakening that followed placed a spotlight on the disparities that have existed for far too long. I have spent this year reflecting on where I want to be as a designer and business owner.
In the midst of the chaos, my vision hasn’t been clearer. The overwhelming support from our community demonstrates that our voice is needed in an industry that too often ignores us. This year I have challenged myself to pivot and manage my own expectations because I saw everything I had worked hard for in jeopardy. I found comfort knowing I wasn’t the only one navigating a pandemic that shut down factories for months and halted production. Then the outpour of support came as people sought to support more black-owned businesses. Through the darkness, there was light, where black jewelry designers like myself received much-deserved coverage and opportunities when they needed it the most. This year our Progression Hoops were worn by Amanda Seales at the BET Awards, we released our first commercial, and designed an IG filter for at-home try-ons. There were some bright spots and that's what I will be focusing on as I prepare for the new year filled with possibility.
As we step into a new year, I challenge you to reflect on the light that has come through the darkness. Set intentions that allow you to spend time doing the things you love and preparing for them to bring you the joy you deserve.
We want to wish you a healthy, and happy New Year. We recognize that we haven’t been able to connect and spend time with our families but we want you to know that you will always be a part of the tribe.
